This is completely normal, and poses no harmful danger. This white powder forms in the presence of excess humidity in the room, as the salt crystals in your lamp quickly dissolve. Salt naturally attracts moisture from the air and the white powder comes from the interaction of the salt crystals and water molecules.

With the help of a damp towel you should be able to wipe away the excess power. To avoid this from happening make sure to clean the base of your lamp with a damp cloth at least once a week.

When it comes to salt lamps, a good general rule of thumb is that for every 1 pound of salt, you’ll be able to clean 16 square feet of space. For example, if your lamp weighs around 15 pounds, it should clean a room up to 240 square feet.
